New Beside Still Waters slides for shiva

Beside Still Waters, our volume for the mourner’s path (co-published with Ben Yehuda Press), came out in 2019. In 2020 when the pandemic began, we made a PDF of the manuscript available online for digital shiva minyanim. Today we’re sharing another resource: slides for shiva (both minhah and ma’ariv / afternoon and evening prayer), keyed to the page numbers in Beside Still Waters. These slides are suitable for screen-sharing for Zoom shiva minyanim and for hybrid / multi-access minyanim (where some are davening onsite and others are davening online), and are designed to work seamlessly with the printed volume (e.g. if some are davening from the book, while others are looking at the slideshare.)

These slides draw on what we’ve learned in the last two years about digital spirituality, visuality as a spiritual tool, and Zoom or multi-access service leadership. Like our Holy at Home slide decks, these slide decks contain multiple versions of most of the prayers. For instance: the evening slide deck features two versions of ma’ariv aravim and two versions of ahavat olam; two versions of the weekday Amidah (including a new illustrated version with a havineinu created just for slideshare); and four options for Aleinu. We recommend choosing the slides that you want to use for a particular minyan.  My own practice is to keep a master slide deck with all of the possible options, and then create a shorter slide deck for each individual service, containing just the slides I want to use that time around.

Important: After you click through to the slide deck via the link at the bottom of this post, please click on the “File” menu and select the “Download” option, and download the slide deck to your own device before editing. Or: click on “File” and select “Make a Copy,” then select “Entire Presentation,” and save a copy of the whole presentation to your own google drive before editing. This will ensure that the slide deck is there in its full form for others to download and customize also.

Here’s a preview of the minhah slides and the ma’ariv slides:

Here is a google slide deck that contains all of the above:

If there are other materials from the book that you would like for us to add to these slide decks, please let us know and we will do our best to add them. We hope that these slides will bring comfort and meaning to you and to all who mourn.
